Wireless Communication

Overview
The word 'wireless' has become a staple buzzword synonymous to 'cutting edge' in the present arena. Wireless is a term used to describe telecommunications in which electromagnetic waves carry the signal over part of or all of the communication path. This wireless link may use Infrared (IR) light or more frequently radio waves (RF) to enable the two-way communication without a cord. Wireless media has been undergoing a rapid innovation process in search for a reliable, simple and business-viable solution to consumer demands for fast, easy and inexpensive information access.
Wireless technology is fast evolving, and is playing an increasing role in the lives of people throughout the world. In addition, ever-larger numbers of people are relying on the technology directly or indirectly.

More specialized and precise examples of wireless communications and control include:-

  • Cellular phones that use the same frequency over and over by dividing up geographic areas into cells.
  • As the user moves from cell to cell, the call is 'handed off' from one antenna to the next.
  • A television remote that uses infrared waves for communication.
  • Companies and their contribution
  • Over the last few years, a number of wireless protocols have been developed and a variety of application vendors have begun to ship wireless products to the market.

Some of the products used are:-

  • WAP by WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) Forum
  • J2ME by Sun Microsystems
  • EZWeb by IDO and Tu-Ka Speed
  • Sky-Web by J-Phones

Among them, WAP is used most extensively.

WAP is a global multi-layered protocol, which is designed to bring internet content to Thin-Client devices.

  • Prior to WAP forum, several vendors were working on the Thin-Client problem such as:- Nokia on NBS and TTML
  • Ericsson on ITTP, etc.

This diversity was threatening to fragment the wireless data service providers.

Thus to develop a common protocol, WAP forum was formed on June 26, 1997 and its members consisted of companies like Motorola, Nokia, Ericsson, Siemens, Samsung, Mitsubishi, Alcatel, Nortel, etc.

  • The analysis of wireless protocols and their interaction with existing Internet infrastructures concentrates basically on the following specific areas:- protocol efficiency and Internet-wireless communication security (including authentication etc.)
  • Access control and authorization functions

When a user makes an access request to a a website through a WAP-enabled wireless device, the website content is translated by the user's wireless service provider (WSP) from HTML to WML, and is then sent to the user. The connection from WSP to a content provider (Origin Server) is an Internet link with SSL encryption enabled as required. The wireless transmission of content radio packets is encrypted using Wireless Transport Layer Security protocol (WTLS).
